The company denies wrongdoing but will not say whether it is going to refund its customers

Robin Rushton, who lives in Scarborough, was working on his yard two weeks ago when a stranger approached him and asked whether he would like his chimney capped.

Rushton, a retired teacher, and Judy Poirier agreed to pay the cost of the service. It can help protect the chimney against animals and weather.

Poirier stated, “We’ve been looking forward to this project for some time.” The guy told me $800. We thought, “Great! Sure, let’s go!”

The couple lost their entire life savings after they hired Eagle Eye Roofing and Masonry, a different company from Eagleeye Roofing Inc., located in Etobicoke.

In a few days, three people from Eagle Eye Roofing and Masonry began to notice other problems on the house. They agreed to sand and paint their deck for $2,500.

One worker reported that he noticed damage to the roof while completing chimney work. At first, only the shingles needed replacing. Then more experienced workers — including a “roofer” and an “inspector”, claimed that they had noticed more serious problems, requiring structural repair work costing $62,000 in materials and labor.

In the following two days Poirier stated that this quote steadily rose to well over $100,000.

Poirier claimed that the men had used “very strong scare tactics” in order to convince homeowners to complete the job immediately, or else their roof would collapse.

He said there was mould, wood that had rotted, wood broken, and damp wood. Roof was about to fall. The roof was about to collapse. Poirier warned, “Winter is on its way.”

“We were terrified. “We were terrified.

The teachers paid $800 in total for their chimney. They also paid $1,500 for the refurbishment of their deck and a $5,000 cash deposit to replace the roof shingles.

The contractors requested that Poirier send a bank draft for $40,000 to the contractor when they said more work was needed on the roof. Rushton provided his own bank draft for $30,000

They were not made payable to the roofer or any of its staff. Poirier thought that the bank drafts were made out to the roofing company or its employees, not the individual who supplied the materials.

CBC Toronto could not locate the person who had received the bank drafts for $70,000.

Poirier claimed that their requests for itemized bills and other paperwork was rebuffed. This made them so suspicious they called in a trusted friend with contracting experience to assess the work.

The crew was kicked off the property by Poirier, Rushton and their shock at what he had found.

Dean Lord who has worked in the framing industry for over 26 years said that he did not find any structural problems with the roof which would have necessitated such a major rebuild.

Lord stated that their roof would have benefited from a set of new shingles which cost $8,500. However, the entire structure was not in need of replacement.

There was no damage from water and the insulation did not suffer any damage. Lord stated that there were no water marks on the rafters’ framing.

It was structurally sound. The roof was in structurally sound condition.

Lord called the company’s work “garbage”, and the price they quoted for the project was “outrageous.”

Lord explained that the plywood cost $300 and two by fours were used to patch it.
