Owner of popular Oakland donut shop feels defeated following a second armed robbery.
A surveillance video taken at Colonial Donuts on December 17th, around 7 pm, shows a person with a covered face entering the store. According to the employee who appears in the surveillance video, the man was armed and approached the counter demanding cash. The suspect leaves with several bills after she gives him the cash register. The employee said the person left by bicycle.
The shop was targeted again in June by an armed robbery, wherein three individuals with guns jumped over the counter to demand cash. ABC7 reported on the incident and the local community held a buyout event in support of the shop.
Colonial Donuts, along with other local merchants, met also city officials to ask for solutions.
ABC7 News received a statement from the owner of this shop, expressing gratitude and relief that no one was injured. They are demanding that city officials take responsibility.
The rampant criminal activity in Oakland is indicative a bigger issue, namely a leadership failure that allowed it to reach unprecedented levels. The growing feeling of unease and insecurity among residents and businesses is something we cannot ignore. The City Leaders are urged to act immediately and take meaningful measures in order to address this crisis. We demand that they acknowledge the unsustainable nature of this situation and take immediate and meaningful steps to address it. We demand that our elected officials be held accountable for creating a more safe and secure environment in Oakland. When will the situation improve? This is a question which looms over all others. Our leaders must provide clear answers and take decisive action! When will businesses and residents stop leaving Oakland and closing their doors? Oakland is a city with so many things to offer. We have stood strong, but when will enough be enough? How can I feel secure in my beautiful city that I am proud to call home? “We need to help — but it all starts with City Leadership acknowledging this.”
