The State Emergency Service in NSW is overwhelmed with requests for assistance due to a supercell storm.
Sydney’s basin has experienced a downpour since 5pm. Pyrmont and Blacktown have been inundated, as well as Woolaware, Woolaware, Woolaware, and the surrounding suburbs.
It was such a strong thunderstorm that it caused the Coles roof to collapse, flooding the store and shelves.
Lake Conjola in the south of the state was submerged by early afternoon. More than 40 houses were drowned by floodwaters caused over 300mm rainwater.
David Van Dyke, a resident of 9News in Seattle said: “It was raining relentlessly. It just didn’t stop.”
I’ve never seen a lake rise so fast. ever.”
Over 1000 incidents of storms have been reported in New South Wales, and the SES received more than 1200 requests for assistance today.
The couple Sue Anne and Mark were forced to leave their house as the floodwaters surged in.
Mark, a reporter for 9News said: “We went into bed around 9-10 p.m. and the water level was fine. Then we woke up at 6 a.m. this morning to find that the car had sunk.
Sue Anne said, “Everything on the lower floor floating about – it was quite scary. We had no power.”
In the southeast of the state, Cobargo is home to strong floodwaters that swept away a vehicle.
In Grafton and Port Macquarie there were damaging hailstones and winds, and in Wollongong and Nowra as well as Batemans bay, Armidale, Goulburn and Batemans.
The storm has already hit Wollongong and Sydney City. It also affected Sydney Airport, Bondi Beach in Newcastle City, Maitland City, Belmont City, Budgewoi City, Toukley City, Gorokan, Belmont City, Budgewoi City.
Overnight, the storm is expected to continue to batter the entire state from Goulburn all the way to Queensland’s border.
In preparation for another storm, the SES has deployed 22 teams in flood and hurricane assistance operations to prepare South Coast and Illawarra.
Sean Kearns, Assistant Commissioner of the NSW SES said that “flash flooding and riverine floods are likely. I encourage people to listen to the advice given by emergency services personnel and not to drive through the flooding water.”
We know that flash floods can cause debris, sewage and road damage.
Residents are asked to be prepared for possible flooding tonight.
Members of the NSW SES will knock on doors to inform residents about their risk and possible evacuation. The NSW Rural Fire Service will also be joining in the preparation by placing a helicopter on the South Coast at Moruya to aid rescue efforts.
In a post on Facebook, NSW RFS stated that the plane would provide dedicated nighttime search-and-rescue capability for those caught in floodwaters.
This helicopter will provide support to two other aircraft that are already stationed at Nowra, Cooma.”
From the South Coast up to Queensland’s border, there have been marine wind warnings as well as flood warnings.
Eastern Victoria is in for some heavy rains starting tomorrow. Up to 100mm of rainfall are expected, especially east of Bairnsdale in Gippsland.
Strong winds and flooding could cause damage to infrastructure, power plants and other facilities in both areas.
Queensland, as well as eastern Australia and the inland are at risk of severe storms.
A spokesperson for the Queensland government warned of “supercell” thunderstorms that could affect Queensland.
The supercells are much more intense than normal thunderstorms because they last for several hours.
